He was born March 5, 1921, to Stanley and Eleanor (Kwasny) Gniadek.
Mr. Gniadek retired from Modine Manfacturing after 44 years in maintenance. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater in the 487th Bomb Group. He flew 23 missions as a tailgunner over Germany. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte VFW, PNA, and Sacred Heart Holy Name Society. He was a loving and caring family man who especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who simply called him “Papa.”
On May 8, 1948, in LaPorte, he married Caroline M. Kukla, who survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Tom) Bush of LaPorte and Kathryn (Jim) Daniels of LaPorte; four grandchildren Jamie Dunham, Julie Buckley, and Andy and Ryan Bush; nine great-grandchildren, Nikki, Hannah, Emma, Kate, Gabby, Drew, Lilly, Ellis, and Sophia (Johnnie); one brother, Stanley (Phyllis) Gniadek of Portage, IN; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Henry and Walter Gniadek; and one sister, Wanda Gniadek.
A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, May 6, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, LaPorte, with Rev. Ian Williams officiating. Visitation will be held at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Wednesday, May 5, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Thursday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the Mass at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with a military graveside service.
