He was born June 5, 1929, in Lumberton, NC, to Viola (Keel) Stewart.
Mr. Davis came to LaPorte in 1949. He worked at Coleman’s for 20 years, then he and his wife Lila ran the public boat launch on Waverly Road for 20 years. During that same time, he also worked nights at Modine Manufacturing. In the late 1960s, Mr. Davis and Charles Dadlow owned D&D Boat Mart (now known as Faye’s). In the 1970s, he ran a route for Davis Thermogas. James also owned several rentals throughout the years. He started the Club Pool Leagues 28 years ago and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, pool, and snowmobiling. James had many adventures on hunting trips to Colorado and fishing trips to the East Coast. He caught numerous record fish and loved to tell stories about his trips and adventures. In 1969, he and a group of friends made a record-making snowmobile trip from Chicago to Yellowstone National Park. James was a member of Eagles 2439, Falcons, PRCU, PNA, American Legion Post 83, Moose Lodge 492, and VFW of LaPorte for many years. Mr. Davis was a hard-working, honest man known as a “Jack of all trades.” He never met a stranger and was a good father and loving husband and grandfather. James will be truly missed by all who knew him. His favorite saying was “Heavy on the Lord, easy on the coke.”
