She was born Dec. 5, 1939, in Odon, IN, to Vernon and Mary Etta (Guthrie) Porterfield.
Marilyn was the former owner of Marilyn’s Restaurant in downtown LaPorte. She was a loving mother and grandmother and an excellent cook. She never met a stranger and was always helping others.
On April 7, 1960, in Michigan City, IN, she married Bill Rist, who survives.
She is also survived by two sons, Michael Rist of LaPorte and Patrick Rist of Austin, TX; three daughters, Barbara (Eric) Rist-Klink, Peggy (Michael) Patterson and Susan Rist, all of LaPorte; 11 grandchildren, Bailey Rist, Taylor Poyer, Shelby Rist, Cameron Rist, Seth Carabine, Raquel Carabine, Diana Patterson, Angel Patterson, Jacob Patterson, Lillian Rist, and Mason Rist; and a brother, Norman Porterfield.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, on Tuesday, May 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday, May 2, from 10 to 11 a.m. A life celebration will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Jack Balon officiating. Cremation will follow.
