Two LP County natives are ordained transitional deacons; will become priests next year

LaPorte County natives Nathaniel “Nate” Edquist and Gregory Bim-Merle moved one step closer to Roman Catholic priesthood on June 4, 2016, as they were ordained transitional deacons. The ceremony took place at Holy Angels Cathedral in Gary, led by Bishops Donald Hying and Joseph Melczek. They will become priests next year.

Nate is the son of Dr. Daniel and Janice Edquist of LaPorte. His home parish is St. Peter Church in LaPorte. Nate is an alumnus of St. Joseph Catholic School and LaPorte High School, as well as Indiana University, Sacred Heart Major Seminary and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. Besides his parents, Nate’s family includes his siblings, Tim (Mary) Edquist, Chris (Leah) Edquist, Ben (Makenzie) Edquist, Kelly Edquist, Nick (Laura) Edquist, and Kaitlin Edquist.

Gregory is the son of Matthew and Lucia Bim-Merle of Trail Creek. His home parish is St. Joseph Church in LaPorte. He was home schooled, then attended Kolbe Academy, St. Mary’s University of Minnesota and Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, and University of St. Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary. Besides his parents, Greg’s family includes his siblings, Lydia Bim-Merle and Michael Bim-Merle.

    Saturday morning was truly awesome. Both these guys are great. We are especially blessed to have Nate as a son of this parish.
