In its 32nd year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, the Gatorade Co. has announced that Brian Bowen of La Lumiere School is its 2016-17 Gatorade Indiana Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Bowen is the first Gatorade player ever to be chosen from La Lumiere School.
The award recognizes not only athletic excellence but also high academic achievement and high character on and off the court. Bowen is now a finalist for the Gatorade national Player of the Year.
The 6-foot-7, 195-pound senior guard and forward, originally from Saginaw, MI, led the Lakers to a 24-1 record and a No. 2 ranking in the USA Today High School Sports Expert Rankings. Bowen averaged 22 points, six rebounds and three assists per game while shooting 59 percent from inside the arc. A 2017 McDonald’s All-American Game selection and a Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year semifinalist, he is ranked as the nation’s No. 12 recruit in the Class of 2017 by ESPN.
Bowen has volunteered locally on behalf of Goodwill Industries International and Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County, and as a youth basketball coach. He has maintained a 3.50 GPA in the classroom. He remains undecided on a collegiate destination.
The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in each state in a variety of boys and girls sports, then names a national player in each sport. A selection committee works with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board to determine the state winners.
As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Bowen will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate and will have the opportunity to enter for an additional $10,000 spotlight grant by writing a brief essay explaining why his/her selected organization deserves additional support. Twelve spotlight grants – one for each sport – will be announced throughout the year.
