Let’s Play Music, a research-based children’s music program, is now enrolling for Fall 2017 in LaPorte. This foundational music program has enjoyed phenomenal growth and acclimation via its innovative and fun ways to teach music to children. The program has been around for nearly 20 years, but the first Let’s Play Music studio in northwest Indiana was established in LaPorte in Fall 2016.
Children begin Let’s Play Music at ages 4-6. Taught by Katie Shannon, certified Let’s Play Music teacher, class sizes are 6 to 8 children for optimal participation and interaction. Weekly 45-minute classes, home study guides and CDs, plus songbooks, flashcards and activity pages, form the curriculum. The second and third years of instruction include classroom keyboards with each child sitting at his/her own keyboard for class instruction and fun interaction.
In 1998, Shelle Soelberg, BYU music education graduate and mother of five, set out to create a children’s music curriculum that emphasized total musicianship through piano playing, note reading, ear training, singing, and classical music study. Let’s Play Music was the result. After two years of teaching, the parents, teachers and students were so delighted with the program that the demand caused her to train more teachers in the method. Since that time, it has grown into a program of 300 teachers and 7,000 students in over 30 states.
Soelberg said, “The reason for the success of Let’s Play Music is simple. It teaches highly complex musical skills and concepts and presents them in a playful class setting. Students dance, sing and play their way through a three-year foundational music theory course. Using research-based techniques, this innovative curriculum begins with singing and simple instruments and by the end of the third year, students are playing piano at an intermediate level, transposing, composing, sight-reading, and are prepared to excel in further private music instruction.”
Enrollment is open now through April for Let’s Play Music classes in LaPorte, which will begin in August. Free sample classes are offered through March. Space is limited! Contact Katie Shannon for more details. Classes are held on the southwest side of La Porte, near the fairgrounds.
