Mayor Meer: MC drinking water has tested safe after Portage chemical spill

Michigan City Mayor Ron Meer would like to update the City of Michigan City residents and visitors in regards to concerns over the chemical spill at U.S. Steel in Portage, IN, the morning of April 11, 2017. 

From the afternoon of April 11 through the afternoon of April 12, the Michigan City Water Department tested the drinking water every 4 hours in response to concerns over any potential safety issues. The results from all of the samples tested revealed NO DETECTION of any chemical contamination to City of Michigan City drinking water. 

City of Michigan City officials have had correspondence with the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the lead agency on this chemical spill, as well as IDEM (Indiana Department of Environmental Management) and will continue to work closely with those agencies to ensure the city’s safety. 

In addition, the Michigan City Water Department will continue periodic testing as the City continues to monitor the situation.
