Former LaPorte High School running standout Stuart West represented his hometown proudly in the 2017 Boston Marathon April 17.
West, a 2011 LPHS graduate, finished with a time of 3:26:48, which put him at 5,066th place among the men — impressive considering there were 14,438 male finishers in this year’s marathon.
West was a four-year cross country runner and indoor track and field runner at Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, graduating in 2015 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He earned numerous conference championships and other records and awards there. At LaPorte High School he was a 2010 and 2011 state finalist in the 4×800 relay and in 2011, finished 5th place for an LPHS school record.
Stuart is the son of Scott and Sheri West of LaPorte.
In the Boston Marathon April 17, “he didn’t finish as fast as he had planned, but the experience was tremendous,” his father told WNLP. “The event and atmosphere were well worth the pain of 26.2 miles. The pre-race dinner, the post-race feast were great, (as were) meeting new people and growing friendships with runners with whom he trained and ran today during the race.”
The top male finisher in the marathon was Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya with a time of 2:09:37.
