April 17, 1917 — Germany has brought the war to the very doors of the United States. A German submarine attacked the torpedo boat destroyer Smith, 40 miles off the Long Island coast.

April 17, 1967 — A former Sunday school teacher here has a little class of her own today. Mrs. John Compton, 820 Plain Street, is the mother of male triplets, Michael, Roger, and Gregory, born at the E Street division hospital.

April 17, 1992 — Anita Bowser is elected to the state Senate, taking State Sen. Dennis Neary’s vacated post.

April 17, 2007 — A shooting rampage at Virginia Tech left 33 people dead. The massacre is the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history.
