Homespun Harmony action, April 20, 2017

Homespun Harmony extension club met Thursday, April 20, 2017, at the Purdue Extension Office in LaPorte. Betty Carpenter called the meeting to order. Roll call was answered by “What would you do if a tornado was approaching?” Thirteen members were present.

Members completed re-enrollment sheets. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. Receipts were submitted from the Master Gardener Show. Dues were set at $15 for next year and are due by the May meeting. There was discussion and evaluation on the Master Gardener Show.

International Fare will be held April 22 at the fairgrounds with the theme New Mexico. Karen Barnhart, Sandy McEnterfer and Janet Gourley will attend. The LaPorte County Fair display this year will be “Our Community Hearts & Hands to Service.” The committee is looking for handmade items of aprons, tote bags and potholders. Look for hands and hearts in your fabric choices.  

The 4-H plant sale is May 13. Deadline for orders is April 28.

The Cultural Arts Contest is May 18 with the next educational retreat.

Handmade Hats are the special state article this year.

Ideas were exchanged for Taste of Extension Homemakers. The club will need to plan a meeting with Kitchen Kin as they are also on the committee. The event’s goal is to create awareness of Extension Homemakers and recruit new members and clubs. Some ideas were scrapbooking & homemade greeting cards, homemade gifts, Halloween costumes & homemade candy, cast iron cooking, pets & kids, essential oils & herbs, shabby chic decorating, pies, juicing, recipes 5 ingredients or less, crock pot meals, natural & organic foods, closet organization, and accessory exchange. Possible time frame is end of September through beginning of October.

Members chose officers for next year: president – Betty Carpenter, vice president – Bette Schafer, secretary – Kathy Ulman, treasurer – Marcia Wolff.

The club held a white elephant auction. Jan Daniels made a motion to donate proceeds from the auction to Coins for Friendship and Nickels for Leadership and Monica Prosser seconded. Motion passed.

Karen Barnhart, Sandy McEnterfer and Janet Gourley served delicious cake and ice cream for dessert as well as sweet table favors.

The next meeting is May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Extension Office, following the Educational Retreat and Cultural Arts Contest.
