May 17, 1917 — U.S. expenditures are jumping by leaps and bounds. An announcement is made that $2,245,000 must be raised by taxation.

May 17, 1967 — LaPorte High School senior Pam Darby reigns as queen of the annual LaPorte Invitational track meet at Kiwanis Field.

May 17, 1992 — LaPorte Hospital plans to open a community health center in 1993 to provide health care for Medicaid patients and poor families without health insurance.

May 17, 2007 — A new rack of lights towers above one of the Slicers’ state-championship banners at Schreiber Field. The diamond will add night baseball to its repertoire.
