May 18, 1917 — Japanese gunboats arrive at Marseilles, France, to aid in the war on German submarines and convoy French merchantmen.

May 18, 1967 — LaPorte’s American Home Foods plant on Fail Road is installing a fully automatic spaghetti weighing and cartoning machine, the most modern piece of equipment available in the spaghetti manufacturing field.

May 18, 1992 — The bubbly Lawrence Welk is dead at age 89.

May 18, 2007 — Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 are showing at the LaPorte Cinema. All shows before 6 p.m. are $1. After 6 p.m., they’re $1.50.
