Today, tubing behind a boat is more the norm. But in the mid-20th century, the more challenging sport of waterskiing reigned on LaPorte’s lakes, so much so that LaPorte hosted national contests in the 1950s. Now the Rotary Club of LaPorte is reviving that tradition as it hosts the first Hub of Awesome Waterski Show, a free event, to take place July 22, 2017, on Pine Lake.

The show will feature the skills of the Lake City Skiers, who are based out of Warsaw, IN. This group of competitive amateurs has won national awards all over the United

States, including Division Two National Show Ski championships in 2006, 2007, 2014 and 2016. Their athleticism, skiing prowess and fun story line provide an entertaining show for all ages. Their signature pyramid skiing is thrilling to witness.

The spectator area will be along the Pine Lake Ski Beach on Waverly Road. That segment of the road will be shut down from 4 to 7:30 p.m. so vendors can set up and operate, and spectators can enjoy the event. Boats will be asked to leave the shore area after 2:30 p.m., but are welcome to watch from outside the ski course. The LaPorte Area Lake Association will be assisting in creating a safe perimeter to protect spectators and show skiers alike.

This free event is being sponsored by Rotary Club of LaPorte, the City of LaPorte, LaPorte Area Lake Association, the Philbrook/Yandt family, Thor Thordarson, Milo Enterprises, West Monroe Partners, and Bethany Lutheran Foundation. Additional

sponsors may join the cause by contacting Rotary via Fran Milo (president) at franmilo@comcast.net. Sponsorship levels are at $250 and $500, although more generous sponsorships will be appreciated and recognized in all advertising.

Parking will be available in Soldiers Memorial Park near Cummings Lodge. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs and blankets to watch the hourlong show, which will run from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In the 1950s, La Porte was known for its water ski shows on Stone Lake, so it’s fun to bring back this kind of family entertainment to the community.

And look for the Lake City Skiers and Rotary Club of LaPorte in the LaPorte 4th of July Parade!

Yeah, it is good to see the return. If I’m not mistaken, my LPHS Health teacher, Ms. Hartz, was a national champion slalom skier from LaPorte. What goes around comes around. Cool!
