July 13, 1917 — The war department announces a draft quota of 17,510 men from Indiana for the new national army.

July 13, 1967 — The Communist world raises the stakes in its bid to replace the West as the major foreign influence in the war-battered Arab Mideast.

July 13, 1992 — A glow-in-the-dark toilet seat earns a 10-year-old boy a place in the Smithsonian Institution. The seat took first place in the household division of the national Invent America competition.

July 13, 2007 — The Cubs finish the first half of the season as the National League’s hottest team.
