James Hickman, 1936-2017

Mr. James L. Hickman, 81, of LaPorte, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2017.

He was born in LaPorte to Fredrick and Frieda (Ploehn) Hickman in March 1936.

Jim was a lifelong resident of LaPorte and happily retired after working for various companies as a draftsman and engineer. He had a love for life and the outdoors, especially fishing. In the spring, Jim could be found fishing for perch on Lake Michigan and ice fishing on Stone Lake in the winter. He was also an infamous do-it-yourselfer and tackled small and big projects alike with passion. He served his country in the National Guard and his Lord in various capacities – most recently, he supported the worship service as a member of the First United Methodist Church band. He was a devoted member and Trustee of First United Methodist Church.

On April 7, Jim married Susan Wingard, who survives. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Also surviving are his children: Mary (Tim) Ford of Knox, IN, William (Peggy) Knoll of Mustang, OK, Peggy Knoll of Michigan City, IN, Brenda (Bruce) Zirzow of LaPorte, and Steven (Tammi) Hickman of New Whiteland, IN; as well as his brother, Richard “Butch” Hickman of Kingsbury, IN. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Ronald Hickman; and sister-in-law, Jo Hickman.

The family would like to thank the nursing staff of LaPorte Hospital for the excellent care of our loved one.

Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte, is handling the arrangements, where the family will receive friends, Monday, July 17, from 4 to 7 p.m., and at First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 18, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. A Life Celebration will be held at the church on Tuesday at 10: 30 a.m. with Rev. Robert Vale and Pastor Larry Owens officiating. Burial of Ashes will be held at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1225 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350.

Messages of condolence may be posted below on WNLP as well as at www.haverstockfuneralhome.com.

Jim and Sue have been great neighbors and friends for nearly 25 years. Jim was always there to lend a hand for neighbors and friends, whether snowblowing in the winter, mowing a lawn or even helping with cars or lending out his tools. He was generous with his time and helpful with his advice. He was a warm and friendly man and I’ll miss my conversations with him. We had a lot of fun talks and always laughed a lot.
I’ll be praying for Sue and all of Jim’s family during this difficult time.
I am so very sorry for your loss. I cannot fathom the pain of losing your closest loved one after 55 years together.
    I’m so sorry.

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Jim and my uncle Leroy McAllister were good friends that is how I met him. He was a wonderful man.
