Sheriff’s office issues press release regarding female inmate found dead in jail cell

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office issued this press release Monday, July 17, 2017, regarding the death of a female LaPorte County Jail inmate in her cell:

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the death of 35-year-old Andrea Roberts, who was being held in the LaPorte County Jail.  On Saturday, July 15, 2017, at approximately 10 p.m., a jail supervisor was conducting routine cell checks and counts. Ms. Roberts was found unresponsive inside her assigned cell. The jail supervisor immediately began to render aid and resuscitation efforts. Members of the LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived and transported Ms. Roberts to LaPorte Hospital. At 10:34 p.m., Ms. Roberts was pronounced deceased by the medical staff at LaPorte Hospital.    

Ms. Roberts had been incarcerated at the LaPorte County Jail since June 2, 2017. She was being held on several warrants that included both misdemeanor and felony charges.

The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office was contacted as well as members of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau. At this time, the cause of death is not known. The circumstances of this event are being treated as an ongoing and fluid investigation by members of the Detective Bureau.
