Aug. 3, 1917 — There was a headlong collision between a motorcycle and a Ford automobile last night about a quarter of a mile north of the Summit on the Michigan City LaPorte Road.

Aug. 3, 1967 — President Johnson authorizes an increase of at least 45,000 U.S. troops in South Vietnam. This will bring the total this fiscal year to about 525,000.

Aug. 3, 1992 — People are asked to fight crime by turning on their porch lights and spending the evening outside on National Night Out.

Aug. 3, 2007 — The 28th annual LaPorte Triathlon, the longest running in Indiana, takes place on Saturday.
