Aug. 4, 1917 — Federal troops will be dispatched to Oklahoma and North Carolina to quell anti-draft riots.

Aug. 4, 1967 — There is no trace of the three men who escaped from the state prison in Michigan City during the noon hour yesterday. This is the fourth escape for one of them.

Aug. 4, 1992 — Four L.A. police officers have been indicted on federal charges of violating Rodney King’s civil rights in the beating of the black motorist last year.

Aug. 4, 2007 — After the I-35 bridge collapse in Minneapolis, county residents are wondering whether local spans are safe. INDOT says two county bridges are “critical” and “serious,” but slated for repair.
