Aug. 8, 1917 — The local exemption board examines 163 men. Only 28 pass and accept service in the New National Army.

Aug. 8, 1967 — The fad that’s fairly popular in the Midwest, the “We’re Number One” craze, is growing in popularity in LaPorte from newspapers to athletic teams.

Aug. 8, 1992 — Gov. Evan Bayh says one good thing has come out of the national recession. It’s opening the eyes of citizens to the fact that education is relevant to them in very practical ways.

Aug. 8, 2007 — Majerek’s Hallmark is the last remaining retail store at the former Maple Lane Mall in LaPorte.
