Aug. 9, 1917 — Commissions are handed out to LaPorte draftees at the officers training camp in Indianapolis. Four made captain, three made first lieutenant, and 10 made second lieutenant.

Aug. 9, 1967 — Gerald “Van” Van Wagner announces his retirement from coaching cross country at LaPorte High School.

Aug. 9, 1992 — Whatzit” is the mascot for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Aug. 9, 2007 — LaPorte native Ron Reed was pitching for the Atlanta Braves when his teammate Hank Aaron broke the home run record set by Babe Ruth. Reed still considers Hank the king.
