Photos and information from Indiana State Police

The driver of a dump truck is being investigated after he lost his load of asphalt grindings on I-94 in LaPorte County Sunday morning and the grindings broke the windshield of a passing car and injured the car’s driver.

The truck driver, Kyle Lemons, 35, of Michigan City, also reportedly left the scene of the accident for a time before returning. Indiana State Police are checking into whether alcohol was involved.

The eastbound truck, owned by Gough Construction Co. out of Merrillville, IN, blew a tire and lost its load at about 8:53 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017, at the 37.1 mile marker, 3 miles east of the Michigan City exit. The truck spun out and struck a median. The thrown grindings hit three eastbound vehicles.

The injured motorist was identified as Youa Jee Xiong, 18, of Sheboygan, WI. The ground asphalt broke his windshield and sprayed throughout his car. He was taken to St. Anthony Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Two other cars were damaged by the asphalt.

Lemons was cited for leaky load, and other possible charges are pending with the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office.

Also responding to the accident were Springfield Township Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, and Cloverleaf and Ace Towing.

In the past I have experienced leaky loads myself, but have never been cited by law enforcement. Get your stuff together, man.

The man driving the truck should not be cited because the truck was not ready for action
