Help fill a LaPorte County truckload of supplies for Texas animals and humans; here’s how

You’ve seen the heartbreaking video and photos of people and animals trying to survive the destruction of their homes after Hurricane Harvey. Among the people stepping up to help is a local resident who is heading up an effort to fill a truckload of supplies bound for Texas.

Shaunna Fonte of New Carlisle is organizing the drive. She has teamed with the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter and the New Prairie Small Animal Clinic to collect donations for both animals and people.

“I’m getting a truck and packing it full of anything we can and driving it down there,” Fonte said on her Facebook page. “SHARE THIS POST AND GET THE WORD OUT! Please know that I will make current posts and videos on my way down to Texas and of course live feeds so everyone can see that their donations went to where they were supposed to go.”

Fonte is in contact with friends in Texas who are keeping her updated on things needed, and she plans to deliver to multiple locations in multiple towns.

Your deadline to take items to either the shelter or the clinic is Wednesday, Sept. 20. The LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter is located at 2855 W. Ind. 2, LaPorte. The New Prairie Small Animal Clinic is located at 5424 U.S. 20, Rolling Prairie.

A list of some things needed for pets includes cat/kitten and dog/puppy food, bowls, litter, litter boxes, pet carriers, kennels, blankets, pet beds, cuddle toys, and towels. The priority list for humans includes baby items such as diapers, baby food, formula and blankets, as well as items for adults such as ibuprofen, Tylenol, aspirin, antacids, liquid soap and other toiletries, towels, blankets, and nonperishable foods such as protein bars, canned foods and jerky. Throw a can opener or paper towels in your donations if you have some handy.

Fonte is also looking for suggestions for a truck to rent or borrow; she is willing to pay out of her own pocket if necessary. Her target date for leaving for Texas is Sept. 24.

Are there any livestock supplies needed such as food, fencing, hay, halters, livestock medicine?
