LaPorte High School fundraiser for hurricane victims draws a thank you from La Porte, Texas

EDITOR’S NOTE: LaPorte, Texas — a bay city east of Houston — was not the hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey but received its share of flooding and devastation. LaPorte High School teacher and Student Council sponsor Joe Ruiz helped students organize a Sept. 1 fundraiser, “Two for Texas,” during which students donated $2 to go toward hurricane victims and in return got to wear hats during the school day. The drive raised at least $1,000. The event drew media coverage in Texas; read the story at this link: LaPorte, Texas, resident sent the following message to LPHS in response to the fundraising effort:

“I just wanted to reach out after reading that your school was helping raise money for our La Porte High School. There’s so much devastation from Corpus all the way to Port

A resident’s shot of flooding in a La Porte, TX, neighborhood.

Arthur. As I write this, we still have boats out actively trying to rescue people from homes in many areas. They are moms and dads, sisters and brothers, family and neighbors. The death toll is rising and the devastation is immeasurable. … You can feel the unsettling atmosphere of the city, and when you look into anyone’s eyes, you see endless amounts of pain. No matter where you go, you just want to grab on to whoever is close to you and hug them tight.

“You guys will never understand how much we appreciate what you’re doing. I know your spokesperson said it won’t move mountains, but that’s not true. It can! Any amount will help our community no matter how great or how small. But what makes an impact is the compassion that you all are showing for complete strangers. When an entire portion of a state is just broken, the only thing that keeps us whole is love, support and compassion. So on behalf of La Porte, I’d like to thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”
