Three Michigan City Port Authority workers are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries after an explosion capsized the boat on which they were working on Trail Creek Sept. 15, 2017.

The three, all from Michigan City, are identified as Alden Hopper, 65, Timothy Frame, 55, and Daniel Hoepf, 34. They were all thrown into the water, but were wearing U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Those were “a positive contributing factor in the rescue efforts following the explosion,” the DNR reported.

The cause of the blast has not yet been determined.

The workers were bringing in swim buoys from the lakefront for winter storage when the explosion occurred.

Besides the DNR, emergency responders included the Coast Guard, Michigan City Police Department, Michigan City Fire Department, LaPorte County EMS, and the LaPorte County Haz-Mat Team.
