EDITOR’S NOTE: Indiana Department of Natural Resources District 10, which covers LaPorte, Lake, Jasper, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, and Starke counties, issued this press release Tuesday night, Oct. 3, 2017. As we all wonder what we can do in the face of numerous recent national tragedies, the final sentence is particularly powerful:

Earlier this evening an Indiana Conservation Officer in Porter County located a disabled Illinois man reported as missing from a physical rehabilitation center south of Chicago, walking along a dark stretch of a busy county road.

Contact was made with the local agency and they were informed he was OK. They informed the officer there were no holds on the man and he asked to go to a local grocery store to get cash back for a hotel. He was only able to get $20, so the officer offered to pay for the rest of his room. Once at the Chesterton Econo-Lodge, the manager and officer both contributed $20 and the man was provided a room for the night.

Accept help when you need it and give it when you can.
