UPDATE: MC couple killed in Rolling Prairie crash; New Carlisle man was driving other car

Oct. 7 afternoon update from LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office:

The LaPorte County Coroner’s Office has confirmed with the sheriff’s office the identities of the two people killed in the crash on U.S. 20 at Bootjack Road Friday night, Oct. 6. The driver of the 2003 Honda Odyssey was Don Kaczmarek, 47, and the passenger was his wife, Angie Kaczmarek, 49, of Michigan City. The driver of the 2006 Ford Mustang was Tron Gorbonosenko, 40, of New Carlisle.

A traffic crash reconstructionist is working with detectives from the sheriff’s office to determine the cause of the crash. The sheriff’s office can confirm that the Ford Mustang was traveling left of center prior to the head-on collision with the Honda Odyssey. Investigators are also waiting on the results of toxicology tests to determine if alcohol may have been a factor in the case of the crash. The investigation remains open and ongoing.

(WNLP editor’s note: WNLP has confirmed that Tron Gorbonosenko has served as a paramedic with LaPorte County EMS. He was listed Friday night in serious condition. Also, the Kaczmareks had been owners of Packman’s Family Pizzeria of LaPorte.)

Oct. 7 Press release from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office:

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that occurred on U.S. 20 Friday night, Oct. 6, 2017. Emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 7:40 p.m. to U.S. 20 at Bootjack Road near Rolling Prairie.

Preliminary investigation found that a Ford Mustang was traveling east on U.S. 20 and a Honda Odyssey  minivan was traveling west. The Ford was believed to have crossed the center line and collided head on with the Honda. Both the driver and passenger in the minivan were killed on impact. The driver of the Ford was extricated from his vehicle and flown by MedFlight to Memorial Hospital in South Bend.

Sheriff’s detectives and the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team were called to the scene for the investigation. As of the time of this release, the cause of the crash had not been determined; alcohol use is suspected and the investigators have requested alcohol and toxicology screening. The names of those involved are not being released at this time; that will be done once the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office has made notification of family members. Once that has been confirmed we will send an updated media release.

U.S. 20 was closed from the time of the crash and re-opened at approximately 10:30 p.m. Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the New Carlisle Police, LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service, Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kankakee Township Volunteer Fire Department.

These people own Packman Pizza in Laporte. I do not know them personally but my thoughts and prayers are with the Kaczmarek family.

I live in Rolling Prairie and it is getting very scary to travel the highway home and to work. I am very saddened that both a husband and wife lost their lives as they were driving home together. If they have kids, then children have lost both parents. If it is proven that an EMS person caused this horrific accident due to alcohol, it is very sad since EMS are suppose to be helping people, not causing sadness and grief to this family. My prayers go out to Kaczmarek family. May your find peace during this very difficult time.
