You could hear the cheers emanating from Kiwanis from miles away Friday night, Oct. 6, 2017, as the Slicers and Wolves gave the crowd a thriller it won’t soon forget. In the end, with just 1.7 seconds remaining, LaPorte quarterback Nolan Lorenz hurled a perfectly placed pass more than 30 yards, where it found the arms of a leaping Mark Haines. Final score on Homecoming night: LaPorte 58, Michigan City 56.
At the end, 14 of the two teams’ total of 114 points were scored in the last minute of the game.
LaPorte was up 44-35 at the half when they came out and took the opening second-half kickoff. They marched it down the field for a TD to extend their lead to 52-35. Michigan City would then score three TDs, including their last one with about a minute to go in the game. Trailing 56-52 with 58 seconds left and 1 timeout, LaPorte got the ball to the 25 yard line (with help from a defensive pass interference call). That’s when Lorenz threw the perfect pass, which sailed past a Michigan City defender and into Haines’ arms.
