Learn how to be a READ LaPorte County tutor at Oct. 13 training session

A tutor training session hosted by READ LaPorte County Inc. will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in Meeting Room B at LaPorte County Public Library, 904 Indiana Ave.

Basic information on tutoring school-aged students and adults will be covered. Lynn Johnson, literacy teacher at Purdue Northwest, will lead the first section, which is on tutoring children. She will give basic information on what it is like to tutor in a school, and will also talk about how children learn and what kinds of reading problems could be affecting them. The second section is on tutoring English-speaking adults. Getting started with tutoring will be illustrated. Materials to use will be shown. A break with complimentary lunch will be held, then the final session will be on teaching adults whose first language was not English. Activities and materials will be covered.
