2 of 88 LaPorte County registered sex offenders found in noncompliance during police check

Just two of the 88 registered sex offenders checked in a Oct. 11 police sweep were found to be noncompliant of registry regulations, according to a LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office press release.

Twenty-six officers from the county, LaPorte city and Michigan City forces, as well as from the LaPorte County Drug Task Force and the U.S. Marshal’s Service made up the nine teams that began checking the 88 LaPorte County registry individuals at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11, 2017. Most of the compliance checks were completed by 11 p.m.

It’s the fourth time local officers have teamed for such a check, this one timed to occur just prior to Halloween and Trick or Treat activities.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office will be assigned to follow up on the two found to be in violation of the registry; those cases will be reviewed by the county prosecutor’s office for the potential of criminal charges to be filed.

“We opted to conduct these compliance sweeps in the fall prior to Halloween out of an abundance of caution” LaPorte County Sheriff John Boyd said. “While the vast majority of offenders are compliant, we feel it is important to verify compliance from time to time. Conducting this operation just before many of our youngsters will be out in neighborhoods participating in Halloween activities is a good, proactive step. Additionally during the sweep, offenders were put on notice that they were being closely monitored during the Halloween and Trick or Treat season and strongly encouraged not to participate.”

Any citizen can search the registry by visiting www.laportecountysheriff.com and selecting the “Search for Sex Offenders” option under the Quick Links found on the main page.
