American Legion invites local high school students to enter Oratorical Scholarship Contest

3rd District Oratorical Chairman Jim Hewitt of American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 in LaPorte is offering all local high school students the opportunity to participate in the 81st annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest.

The purpose of the contest is to encourage high school students to develop a better knowledge and understanding of the Constitution of the United States. Each contestant will have an opportunity to utilize this knowledge in an atmosphere of competitive public speaking. Scholarship awards will be given to the most outstanding contestants.

Each contestant will be required to deliver an 8- to 10-minute prepared oration on some aspect of the United States Constitution, giving emphasis to the duties and responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The area 3rd District contest requires just the prepared orations. Zone, state and national contests require the contestants’ prepared orations and one of four assigned topic discourses lasting 3 to 5 minutes. Contestants will not be allowed a podium, speaker system, or notes. They will be judged on logic, knowledge, subject matter, voice, style, and dictation.

The 3rd District consists of LaPorte, St. Joseph, Elkhart and Marshall counties. It is open to all students in grades 9 through 12 who are attending a public, parochial, private, military, or accredited home school.

Deadline to enter the 3rd District contest is Dec. 15, 2017.

The 3rd District contest will be held Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at 1 p.m. LaPorte time at LaPorte High School.
