Could’ve gone either way, but Lowell edges New Prairie, 25-20, in regional

In a contest of two very well matched teams, the IHSAA Class 4A regional game between the New Prairie Cougars and the Lowell Red Devils lived up to the pre-game hype and remained a close battle through the first three quarters Friday night, Nov. 10, 2017.

New Prairie’s defense made a great goal line stand on the 1-yard line, however that momentum was quashed when Cougar quarterback Nick Wilson was sacked in the end zone for a safety. The game remained a back-and-forth battle with great play on both sides of the ball, but a very controversial roughing-the-kicker call with Lowell backed up to the Cougar 28-yard line with 4th and 21 to go seemed to turn the tide. The questionable penalty led to a Red Devil touchdown.

That advantage was enough to keep the game just out of the reach of the Cougars, although they didn’t roll over. New Prairie scored a TD late in the game, making the final score 25-20 in favor of the Red Devils, who remain undefeated at 13-0. New Prairie finished a great season at 11-2.
