Laura Schmitt, 1953-2018

Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, is handling the arrangements for Laura Ann Schmitt, 64, of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of LaPorte, who passed away Friday, January 5, 2018, after a brief illness with her sisters by her side.

Laura was born in LaPorte on September 22, 1953, to Richard J. Schmitt and Ancilla L. McCabe.  She graduated from LaPorte High School in 1971 and attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where she received her Bachelor of Science, majoring in Psychology. Laura loved Bloomington and continued to live there for several years, working for the City of Bloomington. After leaving Bloomington, she returned to LaPorte County and worked for P.A.C.T. for several years. She then moved to Indianapolis, where she worked for the State of Indiana Department of Mental Health. The state “loaned” her to the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., where she lived and worked for 3 years. Laura then took a position as business analyst with Fairfax County, Virginia, where she worked until her death.

Laura was known as a kind and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor. She loved books, music, movies, and traveling with the Vagabond Princess Sue Barnes, Susie Stevenson, and her sister Martha. Laura was a Hoosier at heart and planned to return to Indiana to retire later this year to be closer to her family. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Surviving are her siblings, Richard (JoEllen) Schmitt of LaPorte, Carol Weissert of Indianapolis, Martha (Steven) King of LaPorte, and David Schmitt of LaPorte.  She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Anthony Schmitt.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, January 12, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, LaPorte, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 13, at St. Peter Catholic Church in LaPorte.  Family and friends may gather at the funeral home on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral Mass.  Burial will immediately follow the service in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte.

A contribution to honor Laura may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Messages of condolence may be posted below on WNLP as well as at www.esslingfuneralhome.com.

“Teeko” is a great loss to your family I am certain. I best remember her as the little girls next door that I got to babysit for occasionally and certainly tease a lot.
I recall so vividly going on a hunt for “Teeko” as she could not be found. I found her in the hole in your garage floor where she had managed to fall between the boards and become missing. She was so happy to get found and be out of the hole.
I know Teeko continued to get into the “stuff” for the rest of her life based on what family members shared with me on occasion.
    God Bless
