Jan. 17, 1918 — With the enforcement of the order closing all industries tomorrow for five days, LaPorte Mayor Herman W. Sallwasser urges citizens to give employment to the men who will be idle during the period.

Jan. 17, 1968 — The FBI raids Union Cigar store, 609 Michigan Ave., and charges the owner and operators with conspiracy to violate interstate transportation of wagering information statutes.

Jan. 17, 1993 — Two South Shore commuter trains crash in Gary, killing at least eight and injuring others.

Jan. 17, 2008 — Two juveniles are in trouble for trying to break into at least 10 vehicles at the LaPorte High School lot.
