Driver ignores crossing gates; train hits van, injuring 2 men

Train personnel and witnesses said a Goshen man drove around activated railroad gates, resulting in his van being struck by a freight train, at Boston and Bach streets in LaPorte on Jan. 29, 2018. The collision occurred at about 9:19 p.m.

The driver, Colton Romenzak, 28, was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital and his passenger, Logan Pierro, 19, of LaPorte, was transported to LaPorte Hospital.

Romenzak was later charged with driving while suspended and Pierro was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Romenzak’s 1997 Plymouth Voyager ended up about 74 feet east of the Boston and Bach streets crossing, according to a LaPorte Police report. LaPorte firefighters and LaPorte County EMS freed the two men from the van.

Police said Pierro was holding a bag that contained a marijuana grinder.
