LaPorte man convicted on 3 counts of dealing cocaine

LaPorte County Prosecutor John Espar announced in a press release that a LaPorte man has been convicted on several counts of dealing cocaine. Omar Dominguez’s two-day trial in LaPorte Circuit Court concluded Feb. 27, 2018, when a jury rendered guilty verdicts against him on one count of Dealing Cocaine as a Level 4 Felony and two counts of Dealing Cocaine as Level 5 Felonies.

Dominguez committed the crimes in late 2015 in the 500 block of East Jefferson Avenue in downtown LaPorte, Espar said.

The case was filed in March 2016 following the completion of three controlled buys of powder cocaine from Dominguez by an undercover operative from the former LaPorte County METRO Narcotics Task Force. During the trial, LaPorte County Deputy Prosecutor Atley Price told the jury that Dominguez was a mid-level dealer who chose to peddle drugs on the streets of LaPorte.

Price noted the successful outcome of the trial was due in large part to the diligent work performed by METRO Task Force detectives, particularly Rudy Esparza, formerly an officer with the LaPorte City Police Department, and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Harlan Williams, former Commander of the METRO Unit.

Price said he will present a case for a substantial prison term when Dominguez is sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Thomas Alevizos on April 13. The maximum penalty the court may impose is 12 years.

Espar said this is just one example of the aggressive position his office takes while working hand in hand every day with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies in an ongoing effort to identify, isolate and eradicate illegal drugs in LaPorte County.
