March 17, 1918 — The German advance along the Black Sea in southern Ukrainia continues. Immense stores of grain, shipyards, and a naval station are believed to have fallen into the Germans’ hands.

March 17, 1968 — Scheduled retail events this year in downtown LaPorte are Mother of the Year, Carnival Weekend, Ice Cream Social, Sidewalk Days, Dollar Days, 4-H Jamboree, Back to School, Moonlight Madness, and Santa’s Arrival.

March 17, 1993 — Screen star Helen Hayes, “The First Lady of the American Theater,” dies at age 92.

March 17, 2008 — Three 15-year-old male students are expelled from LaPorte High School after intimidating a female staff member during the court-ordered Project Extended Day program.
