Learn more about county, state candidates in May 8 primary at these Candidate Forums

The LaPorte County League of Women Voters, the Better Government Study Group and the South County Citizens Coalition will host three Candidate Forums in April 2018 to help voters learn more about candidates in the May 8 primary election:

— Wednesday, April 11, at 6 p.m. at Michigan City Hall Council Chambers, 100 E Michigan Blvd. Invited to participate are: Candidates for Prosecuting Attorney, Michigan Township Assessor, Michigan Township Board, Michigan City Township Trustee, and State Representative District 9.

— Thursday, April 19, at 6 p.m. in the South Central High School cafeteria, 9808 S 600 W, Union Mills (enter via the rear entrance). Invited to participate are: Candidates for Cass Township Board, Cass Township Trustee, County Council District 1, Dewey Township Board, Dewey Township Trustee, Hanna Township Board, Hanna Township Trustee, New Durham Township Board, New Durham Township Trustee, Union Township Board, and Union Township Trustee.

— Wednesday, April 25, at 6 p.m. in the Dworkin Center at Purdue University Northwest, Westville. Invited to participate are: Candidates for Center Township Board; Center Township Trustee; Coolspring Township Board; Coolspring Township Trustee; County Council Districts 2, 3 and 4; Scipio Township Board; and Scipio Township Trustee.

The township mergers described in HB 1005 has focused attention on the role of township government, and as a result an added focus of this year’s candidate forums is township government candidates. The sheer number of Township candidates makes it obvious why extra forums are needed this year.

Candidate forums are moderated Q&A sessions, with written questions submitted by the audience and organizers. Unopposed candidates will be given the opportunity to introduce themselves, but will not participate in the Q&A.

For more information on the forums, contact: Jo Ann Engquist, 219-874-9939 or jaengquist@comcast.net; Leigh Morris, 219-363-2294 or lmorris@csinet.net; or Rick Moore, 219-733-1500, or pastorrick@cbcwanatah.com.
