April 5, 1918 — Dr. Maddox, 35, of LaCrosse, dies in a Chicago hospital after his car’s engine dies on the tracks near Wilders and it is struck by a train. He was on his way to visit patients.

April 5, 1993 — The Medicare trust fund is going broke at a faster rate than expected and has only enough money to pay hospital benefits for senior citizens and disabled Americans through 1999.

April 5, 1968 — Martin Luther King Jr., 39, was the victim of an assassin last night as he stood on a balcony at a hotel in Memphis. Attorney General Ramsay Clark is hopeful that the slayer will be caught soon.

April 5, 2008 — Fifteen years after the 1993 murder of Rayna Rison, people still remember her. Her activities included Girl Scouts, tumbling, band, writing for the Boston Middle School newspaper, German club, and tutoring.
