Terra Verde action, April 10, 2018

Terra Verde Garden Club met April 10, 2018, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The educational program was the documentary “Shifting Sands.” Members learned the fascinating history of the National Lakeshore.

Members were given 2018 Festival Guides and encouraged to take advantage of the many programs available.

President Barbara Edmonds opened the meeting. Dianne Burgis and Vicki Floyd co-hosted. Susie Keifer gave the treasurer’s report. Sue Cummings gave the secretary’s report. Program books for 2018-2019 were distributed and upcoming programs reviewed.  A roll call question was, “What is your favorite spring flower?” Daffodills, tulips, Lenten roses and lilacs were mentioned. Pat Spiess was welcomed as a new member.

The club will give a $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound LaPorte High School student on April 26. This is the second scholarship the club has given to a local student. Donations are also made every year toward scholarships given to Purdue and Ball State through The Garden Club of Indiana.

Members will attend the 88th State Convention of The Garden Club of Indiana to be held at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City on April 23-25.  This convention will be held in LaPorte in 2019.

Sue Cummings discussed plans for the club’s plant sale on June 2 in the parking lot of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.  Plants sold will come from members’ gardens, be well labeled and reasonably priced. Proceeds from the sale will be used for scholarships, planting & care of entrances to Kesling Park, plantings around St. Paul’s Church and educational programs.

Dianne Burgis reported on garden therapy programs in correctional facilities.  Inmates gain skills for life after release and self-respect. Excess vegetables are donated to food banks.

The next meeting will be at St. Paul’s on May 8 at 6:30. The program will be an orchid presentation by Sandy Ohlund, member of the Michiana Orchid Society.  Guests are always welcome. Call Sue at 324-5610 if you are interested in attending a meeting or information about the club.
