Fisherman, 61, drowns in private pond off Joliet Road

Information from LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office

A Westville area man drowned in a private pond after his fishing boat capsized Saturday afternoon, May 5, 2018. Glenn F. Zeman, 61, was fishing in the pond in the 7100 West block of Joliet Road when the accident happened, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Family members who had been at the pond with Zeman reported being unable to find him, then the capsized boat was spotted. Zeman’s body was removed from the water a short time later.

LaPorte County Coroner Bob Cutler determined that besides drowning being the cause of death, a secondary cause was Zeman’s existing condition of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

Besides the sheriff’s office, emergency responders included the Westville Fire Department (first on scene), LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service, LaPorte County Coroner’s Office, Department of Natural Resources, and Westville Police Department.
