Wedding gowns from W.A. Jones family donated to historical society

This wedding gown was donated to the historical society in April. This is Anna Mae Jones Pickering on her wedding day. She was the great-granddaughter of W.A. Jones, who collected most of the guns that are on display in the museum. (Photo provided)

Visitors to the LaPorte County Historical Society Museum in April 2018 came from 7 Indiana counties and 13 states. Tours included third graders from Kingsford Heights and a Pierce Arrow Car Club.

News and events

The museum staff and volunteers attended the Volunteer Expo April 18 at the Civic Auditorium. A luncheon was held to honor the volunteers for National Volunteer Month.

The current display, “Up, Up & Away: A Look at Aerial Photography from LaPorte County” will be up until the end of May.

Things are in full swing for celebrating “The Summer of Love.” Starting June 1, the 1960s will be on display in the museum. Fashions from the ‘60s, current events of the day, and several more surprises are in the works. The museum staff has been working hard at recreating a fun yet difficult decade. Anyone wishing to donate items from the ‘60s that pertain to LaPorte County, call 219-324-6767 and ask for Susie or Janet.

A book release party for the new People Engaged in Preservation book will be held at the museum May 19 starting at 2 p.m.

The gun collection has been getting a new look. Thanks to Mike Belzowski and his hard workers, the cabinets holding the gun cases are all being renovated and look wonderful. If you haven’t visited the guns in a while, now is the time to do it.

Anyone wishing to volunteer at the museum may come to the front desk and ask for an application.
