Would you charge into a burning structure? These guys will.

Try donning heavy gear and then entering a smoky, burning building to rescue people and pets. That’s what our area firefighters do. During the week of May 21, 2018, LaPorte City Firefighters participated in just one of many training exercises they practice yearly by taking advantage of a demolition project on State Street. And of course, WNLP photographer Bob Wellinski joined in the experience.

LaPorte Hospital coordinated with the fire department so firefighters could practice entering smoke-filled structures (using a smoke machine), locating victims, coordinating their teamwork and more.

Dressed in bunker gear, LaPorte Mayor Mark Krentz and Dr. James Edwards witnessed the training, including inside.

And as you can see from the final photo, firefighters will find a way to enter a structure — feet first, head first, whatever it takes.
