A quick start in the first inning jump-started Phi Delta Kappa to victory in the 41st annual Walt Thode Tournament Saturday, June 9, 2018. Phi Delta Kappa stopped Knights of Columbus 6-3 in a game dominated by strong pitching and timely defense.

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the top of the 1st as Walker Setmeyer ripped a hard single to center, scoring Reece Eggert, who reached on a walk. Phi Delta Kappa came storming back in the bottom of the inning as its first four batters — Dionte Obertein, Elliott Beamon, Jonah Cochran and Marshall Schoof — reached base and scored, giving Phi Delta Kappa all the runs they would eventually need for the win.

The Knights’ Walker Setmeyer settled down after the 1st inning, facing only 7 batters the next two innings and allowing one additional run when Rylan Kibble led off the 3rd with a double, scoring on a groundout by Beamon, who had 2 RBIs on the night. The Knights’ offense, however, was struggling against PDK’s Dionte Obertein, who threw 4 strong innings, striking out 7 and allowing just 1 hit and 2 runs.

Kaden Warner relieved Setmeyer in the 4th and surrendered the final run by Phi Delta Kappa. Warner ended the night with 5 strikeouts. Jon Whitaker and Schoof each pitched an inning for Phi Delta Kappa, with Whitaker allowing one run. Schoof struck out the side in the 6th inning and gave up one hit.

After the game, Dionte Obertein was awarded the John Weeks MVP Award for his pitching performance.

I am so happy to see this tournament continuing in honor of my Uncle Walt Thode. I will be sure to share this article with my cousin Sara Thode Bogolin (his daughter) who lives in Texas along with his granddaughters Heather and Dawn. Perhaps one year they can attend!!
