LaPorte Circuit Court Judge Thomas Alevizos had noticed that the American and state flags in the beautiful courtroom were showing their age. The flags ranged in age from 30-50 years old. Alevizos decided that the week of Flag Day 2018 would be a perfect opportunity to bring more community awareness to our flags, especially for the youth, by inviting Boy and Girl Scouts to be a part of the flag retirement ceremony. Beside scouts from local troops, members of American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83, State Senator Mike Bohachek (who presented Judge Alevizos with a flag flown over the state capitol), LaPorte County Commissioner Rich Mrozinski, representatives from the LaPorte County, LaPorte City and Michigan City police departments, and the American Legion Color Guard participated in the June 14 ceremony, during which three new American and one Indiana state flags were replaced.

American Legion Hamon Gray Post 83 will properly dispose of the retired Circuit Court flags as well as any others dropped off or brought to the Legion on June 16 at 11 a.m. at the Legion, 228 Lincolnway, LaPorte. This is the opportunity to have your American flags disposed in a proper ceremony, and is also a great ceremony to witness. Bring your flags to the ceremony or drop them off ahead of time at the drop box behind the Legion. For more information, call Kathy at 219-362-3542 or 219-380-9383.
