Out with the old to make room for the new: aging Handley School items auctioned off

A particularly poignant shot shows students’ farewell messages written on a chalkboard in one of the classrooms.

It’s always a nostalgia trip for an adult to wander through an elementary school and see the little chairs, the low tables, the drinking fountains just a few feet off the floor. Former Handley Elementary School students and workers and the public in general had that experience Monday, June 18, 2018, as items were auctioned off at the existing building on 10th Street as the new school goes up right behind it.

Bookcases, a piano, cafeteria and cleaning equipment, desks and chairs were among items auctioned off by Jim Lestinsky and crew of Lestinsky Auction Services, even as construction crews continued their work outside.

Some people with a connection to the building mainly came to take a walk down memory lane before the existing school building is demolished.
