17-year-old LaPorte County girl dies after being hit by train

A 17-year-old girl from the Hudson Lake area died several hours after being hit by a South Shore commuter train in Hudson Lake on Saturday, June 23, 2018.

The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, which did not identify the girl, stated she was hit on the tracks near East Bell Avenue and North Cottage Grove Avenue at about 12:30 p.m.    

Deputies searched around the stopped train and found the girl underneath the fifth train car. The commuter train, number 506, was traveling west and carrying 122 passengers.     

Emergency personnel removed the female from underneath the train and she was transported by helicopter to South Bend Memorial Hospital. Late Saturday night, the sheriff’s office was notified that the teen had died.

Sheriff’s office detectives and the Northern Indiana Transportation District Transit Police continue to investigate.
