Aug. 3, 1918 — Over 300,000 men were embarked and started overseas during July, a new record.

Aug. 3, 1968 — A strong new tremor shakes Manila today, the 18th aftershock of the Philippines’ deadly “Black Friday” earthquake. The death toll stands at 140.

Aug. 3, 1993 — Construction bids for the Riley and Kingsbury elementary schools renovation projects come in about $1 million over the estimates the LaPorte School Board had expected.

Aug. 3, 2008 — Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn is dead at age 89.
