Susan Hay Hemminger Scholarship Foundation awards $45,000 to 12 county high school students

The Susan Hay Hemminger Scholarship Foundation makes one-year tuition awards to LaPorte County residents who graduate from local high schools and who pursue a two- or four-year degree full time at an accredited institution. Since 1995, the Foundation has made 356 awards totaling $971,100 to 211 separate students (some winners have earned more than one award).

The 2018 awards event, the 24th since the Foundation was created, took place on Wednesday May 30, 2018, in The Gathering Place meeting room of the Presbyterian Church of LaPorte. An audience of 60 was present for the event.

The 12 winners for 2018 (including their high school and graduation year) are as follows:

Christine Ake (LaPorte 2015), who studies biology and Russian and eastern European studies at Indiana University. Her mother is Liliana Ake of LaPorte.

Paige Barenthin (New Prairie 2018), who will study public health at Purdue University. Her parents are James & Diane Barenthin of Rolling Prairie.

Sally Bibb (Michigan City 2018), who will study brain & behavioral sciences at Purdue University. Her parents are John & Melissa Bibb of Michigan City.

Sabrina Bryan (Westville 2016), who studies political science & economics at Indiana University. Her mother is Ann Bryan of Westville.

Brittany Eyrick (LaPorte 2017), who studies actuarial science at Ball State University. Her parents are Steven & Carolyn Eyrick of LaPorte.

Juan Garcia (LaPorte 2018), who will attend the pre-pharmacy program at Purdue University.  His parents are José & Sonia Garcia of LaPorte.

Abigail Gibbs (South Central 2015), who studies communications at Ball State University. Her parents are David & Gretchen Gibbs of Union Mills.

Karmen Halfacre (Michigan City 2017), who studies biology in the pre-physician’s assistant program at Ball State University. Her parents are Gerald & Kristine Halfacre of Michigan City.   

Bailey Kiff (LaCrosse 2015), who studies animal science at Purdue University. His mother is Amy Lawrence of Wanatah.  

Eryn Sitar (Michigan City 2017), who studies mechanical engineering technology at Purdue University. Her parents are Todd & Jennifer Sitar of Michigan City.

Devin Smythe (South Central 2015), who studies nursing at Indiana State University. His parents are Dallas & Tina Smythe of Walkerton.

Hannah Swanson (South Central 2017), who studies nursing at Purdue University. Her parents are Shaun & Fonda Swanson of Wanatah.

About Susan Hay Hemminger

Susan Jeanne Hay was born in Indianapolis in 1958. She was raised in Michigan City, and graduated from Rogers High School in 1976. Susan graduated from the University of Michigan in 1980 and earned a law degree from Valparaiso University in 1983. She practiced law in   LaPorte County from 1983 until 1990, when she was elected Judge of LaPorte Superior Court No. 4. She was the first female judge in LaPorte County, and served until her death in 1993.

Judge Hemminger was a founder of the LaPorte Teen Court, president of the Michigan City chapter of Tri Kappa service sorority, a board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Meals on Wheels, and was a deacon and lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City.
