LaPorte Lions action, August and September 2018

September

LaPorte Lions met Sept 11, 2018, at the Best Western Inn. Boss Lion Tom Ruda led the Pledge of Allegiance and Diane Spoljoric led prayer. Sandra Provan read the minutes of the August meeting, which were approved. Rensselaer Lions invited the club to their 75th anniversary Oct. 20. The US/Canada Forum is in Columbus at the end of September.

John Spiggle gave the financial report, which was approved. He said only one of the four scholarship winners has presented evidence of enrollment.

Old Business: A motion to re-establish use of the Project Fund checkbook was proposed by Spiggle, seconded by Doug Buell, and approved. Spiggle is meeting with a banker to resolve the Konowitz Fund problem on Thursday. No more action has been taken by PDG Kevin Roe about the magnifier. Dictionaries will be distributed to third graders next week by Ruda, Ralph Howes and Barb Smeltzer. Provan reminded members that dues are overdue.

New Business: Spoljoric can find students to man a Wellness Day desk at Walmart Sept. 22. Buell will contact Maple City Lions about Candy Days.

LaPorte High School Leos have requested use of the Lions float for homecoming Sept. 28; the float will be at the fairgrounds from Sept. 12 and they may use it.

A motion to buy batteries for a wheelchair for a student with a debilitating disease was proposed by Paul Marsh, seconded by Spoljoric, and approved.

Lion Tamer Ken Schnable brought in $9.50. The next meeting is Oct. 9 at Best Western Inn, 5:30 p.m. social, 6 p.m. business.

LaPorte Lions met Aug. 14, 2018, at Best Western Inn. Boss Lion Tom Ruda called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. The minutes of the July 10 installation meeting were read and approved; the financial report was unavailable.

Zone chairman Brian Pagels said zone meetings will be held Sept. 19Dec. 19 and Feb. 20, combined meetings with Zone 3B.

Ruda reminded members that dues need to be paid as soon as possible. Past Boss Lion Paul Marsh requested the Lions Alert checkbook be handled by the Alert committee. Ruda said dictionaries for third graders will be distributed in September.

A metal handicap ramp has been donated to the district; if you know of a situation where a ramp is needed, let Ruda know.

New Business: A motion to pursue meetings with Maple City Lions regarding a merger was proposed by Marsh and seconded by Ralph Howes; the motion was approved. Marsh, Doug Buell and Ruda will represent LaPorte Lions.

Past Dist. Gov. Kevin Roe has said a person in our area is in need of a magnifier. Marsh proposed and Diane Spoljoric seconded a motion to donate $600 towards that; the motion carried.
