Oct. 5, 1918 — Six persons are dead from the Spanish flu in the last ten hours in Walkerton.

Oct. 5, 1968 — The accusers and the accused both claim victory in the unruly first round of House hearings on possible Communist involvement in the street disorders at the Democratic National Convention.

Oct. 5, 1993 — Michael Jordan, basketball’s greatest player, announces he is retiring after nine seasons in the NBA, saying he “had reached the pinnacle of my career” and has nothing else to prove.

Oct. 5, 2008 — Purdue North Central in Westville is the fastest growing four-year college in Indiana, according to Chancellor James Dworkin.
